A COMPETENCY-BASED APPROACH TO TALENT ACQUISITION AND WORKFORCE MANAGEMENT

Using a competency-based approach to talent acquisition and workforce management can benefit your business in many ways.

Competency-based assessment can:

  • enable your business to attract and foster the behaviours and skills it values and needs to achieve success and sustainability

  • help you to hire the most qualified individual for the job from your pool of candidates

  • help you more easily assess the skills of internationally educated/trained professionals, which can widen the pool of qualified candidates

  • decrease costs of employee turnover, by helping you to hire the right fit the first time

  • help you to identify your company’s workforce skills gaps, so that training can be targeted, efficient, and cost-effective

Internationally Educated and Trained Professionals (IEPs/ITPs) have many valuable skills to offer Canadian businesses, but employers often find understanding foreign education and work experience challenging. Employers may have difficulty determining whether individuals trained abroad have the specific skills or competencies required to do particular jobs.

Competency-based assessment tools can assist you with understanding any candidate’s prior education and work experiences, including those gained abroad, and help you discover whether specific credentials translate into particular required on-the-job technical skills. Competency-based assessment can also help you evaluate candidates’ soft-skills, such as communication and “people” skills, in a more objective and unbiased manner. The resources found here will get you started on your way to maximizing the benefits of competency assessment and will provide you with some tools, tips and templates, which should make the process user-friendly, efficient and effective.

While engaging in a competency-based approach to hiring and workforce management may require one to invest some added time and resources in the beginning, if done correctly, it will save employers time and money later on. Over time, cost savings can be seen in terms of reduced employee turnover, reduced training costs, and improved business outcomes as a result of hiring the right talent for the job. Similar to how many businesses invest in the right equipment or location, employers should realize the benefits of investing in talent management and hiring the right fit. Employees are often the most important aspect of a business and can make or break a company; therefore, it is a worthwhile investment just like many others that fall to the bottom line.
